Thoughts About This Year and Next

Well, this past year was a big year for us. We farrowed for the first time (instead of buying piglets), put up a grain bin, built several shelters, made hay, butchered chickens, gained a lot of experience rotating animals on pasture and sold everything we rasied! And, I did a MUCH better job maintaining my equipment. Which, has been one of my shames since my real job is basically a maintenance expert! Not to mention all the other projects and the work on this old farm house. Anyway, a lot to feel good about as winter approaches.

Next year, as we plan out our activities, we're looking at raising more animals all the way around. We'll have three litters of pigs for piglets, feeders, roasters and pasture raised pork. We're even going to try to put them in the woods for a bit and see how that does on the animals and the land. This was a big learning year for us. I got a lot of education working at a farm in Galax, Va - Larry and Debbie Bright. I am going to write about my adventure there and post some pics too. An invaluable experience and I made some great friendships!

We're going to raise more chickens too next year. They were really popular. Tracy is still upset at me for selling so many and not leaving us enough for ourselves! We're probably going to raise 200 or so and organize it so we can have folks come out to the farm to pick them up fresh the day of butcher. That way, folks can do whatever they like with them - freeze, cook fresh, freeze all the wings, etc. and I won't have to worry about freezer space.

We're going to try more turkeys as well. This one still has me a little puzzled on how to successfully do. The area we raised this year's flock in had to be moved pretty often to keep the turkeys full of Clover and other good things to eat. If we raise more, I have to figure out my pasture size and how often to move. Don't get me wrong, there are challenges with raising more of all the animals, but this one can soak up a lot of time if I don't think it out well enough.

Not sure if we're going to raise more lambs next year - maybe enough for a good party. There is a farm in Wellington that raises grass fed lamb and we are like minded in our methods. I'd like to develop a relationship with them in the future for many good reasons. I still have to figure out what I'm going to do about mowing the pastures. The young pigs do much better on shorter, tender pasture than taller stuff and that's my main reason for raising them. They are tasty, though.

Now that the grain bin is up, I'll finish wiring it and get it ready for bulk feed. This is a milestone for us as it opens up all kinds of doors. Now, I can buy bulk feed (goodbye 100lb sacks!!) and work towards formulating my own pig feed free of corn. That will increase the Omega3 balance in the pigs to 1:1 and should make them even tastier.

Just some thoughts. I'll try to add more as I can gather them!
